2015 Honda Civic Type-R

Honda announced that it would be bringing the 2015 Civic Type-R  at the end of 2014. They confirmed they have to switch to a turbocharged engine in order to catch up to the competition. A 1.6-liter powerplant was expected, but source from Honda said that it is developing a standalone 2.0 direct injection turbo engine, that will produce at least 276 hp, so expect around 300 hp.

Honda Europe President Manabu Nishimae, confirmed at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show that they are developing 2015 Honda Civic Type-R to be the fastest front-drive car to lap the Nurburgring circuit. He said Honda’s WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini has also been involved in the development work and that they ‘have already set a time approaching the lap record.’ With Tarquini behind the wheel, it’s a less than subtle clue that Honda is aiming for an eight minute lap time to steal the Renault Megane Trophy’s 8’08” lap record.

Prototype of 2015 Honda Civic Type R is said to be seen around Japan with a turbocharged, direct-injected, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and the current CR-Z’s electric motor and battery pack. Reported 221 horsepower mated up to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission and the next-gen Civic platform underneath, the rumored CR-Z has all the makings of a hot hatch riot.

Based on the standard Civic, the chassis will be modified to handle the extra power. Maybe the 2015 Civic Type R will be the fastest front wheel drive car, but there’s also the possibility of a rear-wheel steering system. Honda tried that in the 1987 Honda.

During it’s testings, car has been spied close to the Honda’s technical center near Nurburgring. On the photos taken on the camouflaged vehicle, few things could be noticed: mule features a big rear wing fitted over the rear window, bigger exhaust pipes and a deeper front spoiler that might indicate that this is just the first mule for the Civic Type-R testing some chassis settings. The production version will also get a deep front spoiler, a new rear bumper with diffuser, wider and bigger wheels and sportier seats.

2015 Honda Civic Type-R Release Date

The 2015 Honda Civic will be focused on orientated customers. This means that Honda will focus on improving the chassis and the car’s handling, while the high-revving engine will probably deliver somewhere around 220-230 horsepower. Previous Type Rs were destined for the U.S. market, but  the upcoming 2015 Honda Civic isn’t, at least not at this point. Honda originally spoke of a 2015 launch date, which means we will most likely see a concept at one of big European motor shows in 2014.
