When Bavarian automaker founded independent department for plug-in vehicles in 2011, we all knew that this will be a big deal. The fact that tells us how serious is this project is that BMW invested over 100 million dollars along with SGL Group only in one plant which makes carbon fiber parts for BMW’s electric models. After launching i3 hatchback and i8 sports car, company decided to launch model which will be somewhere between these two models. We can say that new model is a mid-size version of i3, although it has different chassis. It is bigger, it has more space inside and it has bigger cargo. We can say that this is a real family car.
BMW i5 concept
When it’s about design BMW i5 will be a four door mid-size sedan with a coupe like style. Although front end will be pretty much the same as i3, this car is bigger with more space both in cabin and trunk. Simply, this car is more family friendly. We can say that this car is some kind of a European Prius, real modern family car. Also we can say that this model is some kind of BMW’s Mini Countryman crossover but built with the carbon fiber re-enforced plastic used for the i3.
2015 BMW i5 engine
When we talk about engine, it is still unknown which one will be used in BMW i5. Some predict that new model will use same engine as i3. That electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and makes around 170 horses and has 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of max torque. Second possibility is that BMW i5 get new, more powerful electric motor. Finally, third option is current electric motor to be paired with some gasoline engine. It will probably be some economical 3-cylinder engine with around 90 hp.
All in all, this stretched version of i3 could be a perfect choice for all those who look for a urban family car. It is good looking, spacious, it has big cargo and most important, it should be economical. However, there is no information about release date and price, just speculation that it could be released in 2015.
